Lawn mower blades

When is the last time you sharpened lawn mower blades? If you answered, “never,” chances are that your blades could be in better shape. In order to keep lawn mowers performing at a high level, you will most likely want to sharpen the blades on these mowers at least once each month.

In order to sharpen lawn mower blades, follow these steps:

• Remove cable – The first thing you need to do when sharpening lawn mower blades is to remove the battery cable from the mower. This is done to completely make sure that the mower will not accidentally come on while you have your hands on the blade.

• Remove the nut – There should be a nut (not edible) that will be holding the blades to the deck. This needs to be removed. The easiest way to do this is to grab a wrench and remove the nut.

• Sharpen – Many people recommend using a file to do the sharpening of the blades. It is important to keep the lawn mower blades balanced, so if you file for so long on one side, you should file the other side for the same amount of time.

Even though it may seem like a good idea to use a grinding stone, you should resist this temptation. A grinding stone can actually cause significant damage to lawn mower blades by pitting the blade.

In order to get the sharpest blades, you should sharpen the lawn mower blades at about a 45-degree angle. Remember to keep things steady and even.
