Electric lawn mowers, Cordless, and Black and Decker

As gas prices continue to climb many people are beginning to see the benefits of using renewable energy and lowering the amount of energy consumed. There is not one easy shift to begin conserving energy, often many small conservation efforts in combination are what drastically reduce energy costs. Just installing solar panels on a roof top will not solve all energy problems. High energy consumption can use up that renewable power as quickly as it is generated. The best way to lower energy consumption is with small changes, such as switching to low energy light bulbs, unplugging electronic devices when not in use and using more efficient household appliances and tools such as electric lawnmowers.

Electric lawn mowers are very similar in construction and use as a traditional gas powered mower, but they use electricity to power the blades. It may not seem like much of a benefit yet, because most electricity is still produced by burning fossil fuels, but on average an electric mower only consumes $3 of electricity per year with weekly use. A similar sized gas model would consume that much gas in a week or two. Electric mowers are also much easier to maintain and have a longer lifetime. There are much less moving parts, and absolutely no fluid involved that would need constant attention in gas powered models. They are also safer, no toxic and explosive materials ever have to be handled.

Electric mowers are broken down into two groups, corded and cordless. A model with a cord is often less expensive, no batteries are needed, but they are limited to the range of the cord in relation to the location of the plug. There is also a danger of running over the cord with the mower, severing the cord and stopping the engine. It can also pose a rick of shock. Corded mowers are good for small lawns, but larger properties are better suited for a cordless model,

A cordless electric lawnmower has a set of built in batteries that have to be charged before use. Often the mower just has to be plugged into a wall socket when not in use, and different models have various sized batteries depending on how long the machine will be in use. Some models have the added benefit of being able to be cordless, or corded when the batteries are low. Solar powered lawn mowers are beginning to be manufactured in combination with batteries.

Another type of electric lawn mower actually rides on a cushion of air just like a hovercraft. They use a turbine above the blades to send air towards the ground creating a cushion of air for the mower to glide on. This allows for almost effortless mowing of lawns that are flat and consistent. Variable terrain causes the aircushion to vanish which can cause some difficult situations even though they are purposefully built very light.

Robotic electric mowers are the second most used household robots and are almost completely autonomous. They are about the size of a small cooler and are programmed to traverse a lawn completely mowing the grass without interfering with pets, people and obstacles. They drive back into their own charging station at night to power up, and many models have a rain sensor so they don’t mow when it rains. Electric mowers are quickly replacing gas powered ones because of their ease of use.
